Pregnancy Drama

This has been the craziest week yet and it is only Wednesday. On Monday morning the secretary at school told me that one of my students was at home sick with Fifth's Disease, which I had already known is one of those pregnancy no-no's. I wasn't sure why, but I knew I had to call my doctor right away. They told me to come in either Monday or Tuesday for a blood test and to keep the student home sick until we know more. My aide then checked the cheeks of every kid in the class and we thought we might have another case. We sent that student to the office and the nurse confirmed it was Fifth's Disease. I began researching it a bit to inform the parents and it sounded much more serious if I was earlier in my pregnancy and plus, the nurse at my OB said I was probably immune to it and just didn't even know it. I went to the OB after school and gave my blood. The doctor said it was going to take a bit to get the results and the kids that had been infected should stay home but the nurse said results would be back on Tuesday. I called the doctor again on Tuesday to find out the results and they informed me they would not have results back until Sunday...but they won't be open... so Monday... but they won't be open...so Tuesday. And that I was supposed to keep the kids that had been infected home until then! Well, that just seemed ridiculous. I talked to the nurse about how the kids that technically were infected are not contagious anymore once they showed signs and it was really the other kids in my class that could have it, so didn't it seem right to just take me out of the equation? Plus, how was I supposed to tell parents that although there is nothing wrong with their child they have to stay home all week?! So we did a little calling around to other nurses and doctors to find out their opinions and everyone else agreed that is it me that should be home to eliminate any risk to the baby. The one doctor said that hopefully if I stay home 3 days this week plus the 3 day weekend, anyone that was going to get it should have gotten it by then and I'd be fine, regardless of the test results. Although 3 days off from school sounds fun, NOT at the end of the year when we are trying to do and organize so much! So I worked for about 3 hours last night on trying to put notes together and lesson plans to finish out the week and then went in early this morning with my mom to put everything together while she scrubbed my room from ceiling to floor! So here I am...at home...waiting for test results that will probably say that I was immune to it, but why take the risk? I have never been a risky person my whole life, so why would I gamble with the baby's health, who by the way is the most active boy on the block!

There were so many other fun posts to write about: fun gifts from Julianne and the adventures of baby furniture shopping, but those will have to wait for another day....
